Grief
variable edition of 6
4 x 5 (closed), 23 pages
Sometimes we experience a grief so deep that there are no words to describe it. The idea for this piece came when the only thing that seemed to soothe the grief were long walks at night, looking at the stars. The nighttime dark was so much softer and gentler than the dark of grief.
So, the grief journey in this artist's book begins with a single tear. More tears fall, pool, and eventually fill the frame. A (purposefully uncomfortable) too-long period of dark follows. But, just when the dark becomes too overwhelming, a single star appears that shifts the viewer's perception from an ocean-of-tears dark to a gentler dark of night-sky. Slowly, stars return. Clouds come, but dissipate. A long-awaited dawn finally brings the promise of light and hope.
This artist's book was made with handmade cotton paper from Papeterie St. Armand. Pages were individually stained with tea to give an aged feel, and then hand-painted with layers of transparent acrylic paint. The binding is a modified Coptic style using Icelandic wool yarn. A ready-made box with decorative lining protects the book. Signed and numbered.
