Artist Statement
The inspiration for my paintings and artist’s books usually stems from a personal experience or an issue that has gripped my attention and imagination. I find the intersection of personal story, mythology and psychology to be a rich and fascinating place. Using metaphor, symbolism, and myth in my work brings new - and often unexpected - layers of meaning to the piece.
Most often, the writing process comes first, after which I consider the imagery, the book structure, and what format will best support the story and the emotion I’m trying to convey. I use transparent layers of acrylic paint and colored pencil – or digitally-created images – to explore topics that are both deeply personal and at the same time Universal. The resulting artwork speaks to our lived experiences, and the deep commonalities of being human.
