Confluence: A Self Portrait
acrylic painting on board
24 x 36
The wild streams of Ireland and Scotland don't meet the Germanic Rhine, of course. The confluence of these rivers are a metaphor for the traditions that flow from my maternal and paternal families. The Celtic spirit of music, mist and untamed places is juxtaposed with a refined, formal Germanic propriety - I am an amalgam of the two. They have marked me (as permanently as a tattoo might) - and so I've placed them on the outline of my back.
